Nombuso Sithole
PhD Candidate
Nombuso is interested in understanding the relationship between gut and cutaneous microbiota in South African Individuals. Her research focuses on investigating the interaction between skin and gut microbiota, the impact of urban and rural diet-related lifestyles on the gut microbiome, and how these factors influence the onset and severity of acne. As South Africa undergoes a rapid transition from rural to urban lifestyles, Nombuso’s work seeks to elucidate what these changes mean for skin health using a multi-omics approach. Beyond her focus on skin health, Nombuso is passionate about broadening the knowledge of the African human microbiome, monitoring non-communicable diseases in Africa, and finding solutions tailored to the unique microbiome of African individuals.
